Surf clam (Mectra veneriformis) was extensively utilized as a raw material for manufacturing flavouring materials as well as alive feed at various aquaculture farms, but with a tendency of descreasing its resources, it is now being favoured for human comsumption. The aim of this study was to provide information to keep this important resourced and maintain sustained yeild in Korea. Samples taken monthly were measured and weighed, and annuli on the shell were read, from which cohort, age by annuli, period of reproduction, relative growth rate, biomass and, turnover rate and time were observed and calculated.
The annulus was produced once a year, usually from March to April whilst in other bivalves, it occured usually from August to September. The first recruit period was in July when the shell length was 0.75§®. Six age groups (cohort) from 0 to 5 years old were identified in the area studied. The relationship between shell length (L) and total weight (w) was W = 1.0898 ¡¿ 10^(-4)L^(3.2798). Growth rate was the lowest in winter preiod, whilst highest mortality occurred in summer period. Estimated annual mear standing crop and production were 3,855.439g¡¤m^(-2) and 3,933.062g¡¤m^(-2) in wet weight respectively. The turnover rate of 1,020 per year relatively high compared with the rates of other species and turnover time was 0.980 year.
